Goldberg Variations – Johann Sebastian Bach
The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a musical composition for keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an aria and a set of thirty variations. First published in 1741, it is named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may also have been the first performer of the work.

Jeffrey Lavner is on the piano faculty of the Colburn School’s Community School of Performing Arts, Music Academy, and Conservatory of Music. He severed Chair of the Piano Department at the Community School through 2024 and Co-coordinator of Keyboard Skills for Non-Majors in the Conservatory. Previously, he was an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Southern California, as well as a faculty member at Santa Monica and Golden West Colleges.
He holds a Bachelor of Music with performance honors from Syracuse University and a Master of Music from the University of Southern California. His piano studies included Daniel Pollack, Milton Stern, George Pappastavrou, Béla Nagy, and Gabriel Chodos. And harpsichord studies with William Neil Roberts and Malcolm Hamilton.
Mr. Lavner has appeared in performances at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Norton Simon Museum, J. Paul Getty Museum, and Huntington Library.
His earliest professional experiences were as a jazz pianist, and he now performs as both pianist and harpsichordist, previously with Harmonia Baroque (2001-2003), and currently with the Los Angeles Baroque Players.
